Explanation

(This amendment provides $208,000 the second year from the general fund for the Rx Partnership to operate the Access to Medication Program (AMP). The Access to Medication Program provides Virginia Free and Charitable Clinics with access to generic medication through AMP, generic medication is purchased in bulk through group purchasing models for a significantly lower cost than the free clinic or patient was previously purchasing the medication at retail cost. Free clinics/patients obtaining medication through AMP have seen a 93% - 96% decrease in the cost of a 90-day supply of medication when compared to the purchase of the same drug at a retail pharmacy. The program is creating cost savings for the participating clinics, allowing the clinic to redirect resources to provide additional services. In its first year of operation, AMP served 7 of Virginia's 63 free and charitable clinics. The additional funding will be used to offer the AMP program to more free clinics. The funding will also be used to add additional medications to AMP's existing formulary of the 34 of the most needed generic medications.)
