Explanation
(This amendment provides funding to expand the Consumer Support and Involvement Pilot Project initiated by the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services. Currently five community services boards and two state facilities operate pilot projects to promote active consumer and family involvement and participation in the mental health, mental retardation and substance abuse services system. This amendment would provide funding for the dissemination of strategies which have been proven effective by the pilot projects in each of five regions statewide. Funding would be used to: (1) educate and train families of persons who are receiving services on how to participate in the service system; (2) train consumers to conduct peer counseling; (3) establish a consumer and family involvement coordinator position within the Department; and (4) implement an information exchange program to collect and disseminate information on "best practices" for consumer and family involvement strategies.)
