A. Out of this appropriation, $445,000 the first year and $445,000 the second year is provided from the general fund for 67 medical scholarships the first year and 67 medical scholarships the second year for students who commit to practice in underserved areas of the state pursuant to § 32.1-122.6, Code of Virginia. Four scholarships the first year and four scholarships the second year shall be designated for Virginia residents who attend the School of Medicine at East Tennessee State University pursuant to § 32.1-122.5:1, Code of Virginia. The three state medical schools shall fully match all state funds for scholarships awarded to new applicants. A committee composed of representatives from the Department of Health and the three medical schools shall be established within the Department of Health to determine regulations and procedures for the Medical Scholarship Program.
B.1. Out of this appropriation, $358,139 the first year and $358,139 the second year from the general fund is provided to support health professions training activities conducted under the auspices of the Virginia Statewide Area Health Education Centers Program, pursuant to § 32.1-122.7 Code of Virginia. The Program shall work in cooperation with Virginia's three medical schools to achieve the goals of the Virginia Generalist Initiative.
2.a. Out of the amounts appropriated in the preceding paragraph, the following sums shall be provided to support student recruitment and admissions activities at the indicated schools of medicine: $65,824 the first year and $65,824 the second year for the Statewide Center for the Advancement of Generalist Medicine at the University of Virginia; $49,900 the first year and $49,900 the second year for the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College of Virginia Center for the Advancement of Generalist Medicine; and $2,415 the first year and $2,415 the second year for the University of Virginia Center for the Advancement of Generalist Medicine.
b. These resources shall be used to supplement existing student recruitment and admissions initiatives of Virginia's three medical schools and the Virginia Statewide Area Health Education Centers Program.
c. Out of this appropriation shall be provided $200,000 in the second year from the general fund to support the Eastern Virginia Area Health Education Center Program.
3. Out of this appropriation shall be provided $300,000 the first year and $300,000 the second year from the general fund to support the Blue Ridge and Southside Area Health Education Centers.
C. Out of this appropriation, $25,000 the first year and $25,000 the second year is provided from the general fund for five nurse practitioner scholarships pursuant to § 32.1-122.6:02, Code of Virginia.
D. Out of this appropriation, $25,000 the first year and $25,000 the second year shall be provided from the general fund for ten dental scholarships per year pursuant to § 32.1-122.9, Code of Virginia.
E. Out of this appropriation shall be provided $50,000 to the Virginia Physician Loan Repayment Program, pursuant to § 32.1-122.6:1, Code of Virginia, for medically underserved areas in the Counties of Lee, Scott, Wise, and the City of Norton. Any unobligated balance for this program on June 30, 1999, shall be reappropriated for expenditure in the succeeding year within other medically underserved areas of the Commonwealth.
