Explanation

(This amendment provides an additional $40,000 from the general fund each year for the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes program. This would increase funding for this program from $10,000 each year to $50,000 each year. Despite the mistaken belief that people with intellectual disabilities receive the same or better health care than others, they typically receive sub-standard care or virtually no health care at all. This amendment will provide funding to help the Healthy Athlete exam and treatment program expand so that Special Olympic Athletes can continue to come to Summer Games expressly to receive the benefits of this life-changing program. This program will also provide valuable training for the medical community; a group that receives virtually no training in treating the special needs population. Funding would be provided from the unappropriated balance.)
