"B. Included in the amounts appropriated for this item is $3,000,000 the first year from the general fund to support cancer detection and data collection for firefighters across the Commonwealth. Of this amount, the Department shall designate $2,000,000 for career firefighters and $1,000,000 for part-time and volunteer firefighters. The Department shall solicit requests for funding from local departments that is based on the number of firefighters employed and distribute the grant funds based on established criteria. Grant awards shall be used primarily for cancer screenings and shall cover an ultrasound test specific for detecting cancers at a cost of $350, with localities responsible for covering additional expenses for more advanced blood testing screening options. The grant must include a data collection component that includes employment and workplace exposure history, demographics, comorbidities, and lifestyle factors in order to improve knowledge about cancer risks for firefighters."



Explanation

(This amendment provides $3.0 million GF the first year for a grant program administered by the Department of Fire Programs for localities to conduct cancer screenings for firefighters and collect data on the screening results.)
