"Y. Out of this appropriation, $4,000,000 the first year and $4,000,000 the second year from the general fund is provided to the Department of Education for the purpose of awarding grants on a competitive basis to any school division that provides a foreign language course in a foreign language that is currently identified as critical by the National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarship program. Grants made by the Department of Education to a local school division are limited to $2,000 per student who successfully completes a critical foreign language course per school year. Further, the Department of Education shall maintain and periodically update a list of foreign languages that are currently identified as critical by the National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarship program for the purposes of the Critical National Security Language Grant Program."



Explanation

(This amendment provides $4.0 million each year from the general fund to DOE to provide $2,000 grants to school divisions for each student that successfully completes a critical foreign language course as defined by the National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarship program. This funding is pursuant to the adoption of House Bill 1029.)
