"5.  The Department of Health shall assess the activities of the Statewide AHEC Program and the need for continued state funding for the statewide office and the Centers for the Advancement of Generalist Medicine at the University of Virginia and the Medical College of Virginia.  The Department shall report its findings and recommendations to the Governor and Chairmen of the House Appropriations and Senate Finance Committees by October 15, 2002."

Explanation
(This amendment reduces funding for the Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) by 10 percent each year. It eliminates language earmarking the distribution of funding to each AHEC, allowing flexibility for the allocation of the remaining state funds among the AHECs. In addition, funding is eliminated for the Centers for the Advancement of Generalist Medicine at the teaching hospitals in the second year. Language is added to redirect the activities of the AHECs funded with state general funds to focus more specifically on recruitment and retention, practice support, and training of health care professionals in medically underserved areas or areas with medically underserved populations. Language also requires the Health Department to assess the activities of the Statewide AHEC program and make recommendations on the need for continued state funding for the Centers for the Advancement of Generalist Medicine located at the teaching hospitals.)
