"H.  Out of this appropriation, $2,500,000 the first year and $2,500,000 the second year shall be provided as a supplemental payment to support acute care hospitals that provide obstetrical services to a rural and federally designated medically underserved area, resulting in fewer than 500 births per year, and is more than a 60 mile drive to the next closest Virginia hospital providing obstetrical services."

Explanation

(This amendment provides a supplemental payment of $2.5 million from the general fund each year to support acute care hospitals that provide obstetrical services to a rural and federally designated medically underserved area, resulting in fewer than 500 births per year, and is more than a 60 mile drive to the next closest Virginia hospital providing obstetrical services. Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital (RSMH) is the only acute care hospital in Virginia that meets this criteria. This supplemental payment offsets operating losses and supports recruitment and temporary physician expenses. The long-term financial sustainability of the obstetrical program at RSMH is at risk, yet, the service is of critical importance to the citizens of the eastern Shore.)
