Explanation
(This amendment provides funding to provide dental benefits for Medicaid- eligible adults. Language is also added directing the Department of Medical Assistance Services to amend the State Plan for Medical Assistance to add these benefits. Currently, dental benefits are provided only to children under age 21. A 1999 study by the Joint Commission on Health Care on ways to improve access to dental care found that the lack of dental care not only affects a person’s dental health, but can also contribute to serious medical problems. Extending dental benefits to Medicaid eligible adults was one of the recommendations of the Joint Commission on Health Care to improve access to dental care.)
