Explanation
(This amendment provides additional funding and five positions to the Department of Health to (i) designate Virginia communities as dental, medical, and mental health provider shortage areas and maintain these designations; and (ii) coordinate the Commonwealth’s efforts in recruiting and retaining providers in underserved areas. A Joint Commission on Health Care study conducted last year found that many areas of the state that would qualify as underserved areas have not been designated, and that there is very little active recruitment of providers and medical residents to underserved areas. This is a recommendation of the Joint Commission on Health Care.)
