"G. The Department of Health shall develop and implement a program to reduce the rate of asthma-related hospitalizations and to facilitate more effective management of asthma.  The program will place primary emphasis upon, but not be limited to, children between the ages of 0 and 18 years.  The Department of Health will use this appropriation to leverage additional resources through partnerships, in-kind contributions from stakeholders, and grant writing for additional private or federal funding.  The State Health Commission shall provide the State Board of Health with an initial report concerning the development, implementation and effectiveness of the program prior to December 1, 2001.

Explanation
(This amendment provides funding and positions to the Department of Health to develop and implement a state asthma management program. This amendment is a recommendation of the Joint Commission on Health Care. Language is added to direct the Virginia Department of Health to develop and implement the program, and to use the funding provided to leverage added resources for the program.)
