Explanation
(This amendment provides $223,000 the second year from the general fund for the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). These funds are intended for the purchase and installation of software required to enable the AFIS system to process automatically requests for fingerprint checks for non-criminal purposes, such as employment background checks for public and private schools, community services boards, home health agencies, and other agencies. Currently such requests are handled manually, and as a result there are lengthy delays in providing the service. A companion amendment to Item 491 in House and Senate Bill 30, as introduced, provides additional positions to handle these requests within 72 hours when the new software is installed.)
