(This amendment provides $150,000 in general fund support for the Virginia Economic Bridge for two purposes. $75,000 is provided to establish a pilot program identifying some 25-50 workers (with undergraduate degrees) from the Displaced Worker Program and to train these workers in fundamental computer skills over a three-month period. Additionally, Virginia Economic Bridge will identify corporations in Northern Virginia that will employ these workers in off-site facilities in Southwest Virginia. The second $75,000 is to establish a planning grant involving the Educational Policy Institute of Virginia Tech and the Virginia Economic Bridge New Century Public Education consortium. The purpose of the planning grant would be to explore the possibility of creating a mechanism by which school divisions in the region can undertake research on issues and policies impacting the schools.)
