"WWWW. Effective July 1, 2024 the Department of Medical Assistance Services shall have the authority to amend the State Plan for Medical Assistance under Title XIX of the Social Security Act to provide coverage for adult pancreas transplantation. The department shall have authority to promulgate emergency regulations to implement these changes within 280 days or less from the enactment date of this act."

Explanation

(This amendment provides funding to the Department of Medical Assistance Services to amend the State Plan of Medical Assistance to provide coverage for adult pancreas transplantation. While Medicaid currently covers kidney transplantation for all eligible patients, it does not cover pancreas transplantation. Simultaneous Pancreas-Kidney transplantation (SPK) is one of the most effective treatments for patients with insulin-dependent diabetes and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Since Medicaid does not cover adult pancreas transplantation, Medicaid patients who are recommended for a SPK transplant must forego the procedure.)
