"SS. Out of this appropriation, $2,000,000 the first year and $2,000,000 the second year from the general fund is provided to the Department of Education, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, to establish a school nutrition and agriculture technology pilot program. The pilot will utilize enclosed hydroponic controlled-environment agriculture to cultivate sustainably grown produce to enhance public school meal programs and align or support STEM curriculum and project-based learning opportunities in the science and technology of indoor farming. The Department of Education should give substantial consideration to schools located in food deserts and shall partner with a SWaM vendor with previous experience working with K-12 public schools and institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth of Virginia."



Explanation

(This amendment provides $2.0 million GF each year for a school nutrition and agriculture technology pilot program, to be administered by the Department of Education in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.)
