Explanation

(This amendment provides $500,000 the first year from the general fund to support restoration of Douglass Cemetery in Alexandria. This request is a match to City CIP funds and will allow for the historic African American cemetery to be restored to its original 1895 vision. Douglass Cemetery is an abandoned historic African American cultural resource in the City of Alexandria that is experiencing severe flooding, with drainage issues causing the ground level to sink and headstones to topple over. The Office of Historic Alexandria is seeking an additional $500,000 from the State to complete the preservation work necessary to stabilize the landscape of the cemetery and resolve the extensive drainage issues. These final stabilization efforts include sod and landscape repairs, headstone conservation, and necessary archaeological testing.)
