"WWWW. Effective July 1, 2024, the Department of Medical Assistance Services shall amend the State Plan for Medical Assistance Services to include a provision for payment of medical assistance, at the prevailing fee schedule, for federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved long-acting injectable or extended-release medications administered for a serious mental illness or a substance use disorder in in any hospital emergency department or hospital inpatient setting, including a state hospital or state psychiatric hospital."

Explanation

(This amendment provides $177,689 the first year and $177,906 the second year from the general fund and $1.3 mullion from nongeneral funds each year to provide for the reimbursement of long-acting injectable (LAI) or extended-release (ER) medications outside of the daily Medicaid reimbursement rate. These medications are used to treat individuals with serious mental illness and substance use disorder, who are admitted to hospital emergency departments and inpatient settings, as well as state hospitals, including state psychiatric hospitals. These medications are already covered in the Medicaid program, but this will unbundle the payment for these medications in institutional settings to facilitate greater patient access, compliance and continuity of care.)
