"SS. Out of this appropriation, $2,000,000 the first year and $2,000,000 the second year from the general fund is provided for the creation of a school nutrition/agriculture technology pilot program as a coordinated effort between the department and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. This pilot shall utilize enclosed hydroponic controlled-environment agriculture to cultivate sustainably grown produce to enhance public school meal programs; and align or support STEM curriculum and project-based learning opportunities in the science and technology of indoor farming. The department shall prioritize schools located in food deserts. The department shall partner with a SWaM vendor with previous experience working with K-12 public schools and institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth of Virginia."



Explanation

(This amendment provides $2,000,000 in each year for the Virginia Department of Education, in coordination with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, to establish a school nutrition/agriculture technology pilot program.)
