Explanation
(This amendment provides additional support and positions for the Natural Area Preserves. Currently DCR manages 52 Natural Area Preserves covering more than 42,000 acres with only ten FTE positions and a base budget of $720,000. The preserve system has more than doubled in size in the past six years but funding and positions have actually been reduced. By the end of 2009, DCR is projected to dedicate 15 new Natural Area Preserves with 12,000 additional acres, bring the system total to 67 preserves encompassing over 54,000 acres. This additional funding will ensure that the agency is better equipped to address management challenges including theft, illegal activity, poaching, dumping, invasive species and resource management. This amendment would also provide immediate staff and operational support for the Crow's Nest property in Stafford County, which is one of the East Coast's most highly valued preserves located in an urbanized area with a projected high volume of public utilization.)
