Explanation
(This amendment provides $250,000 the first year from the general fund to the Chesapeake Bioscience Education Foundation. The requested funds would be use to 1) increase the number of student internships at Virginia bioscience companies, labs, and institutes from 15 in 2007 to 50 in 2008 and 75 in 2009; 2) provide for 50 middle school children to attend the 2009 "Biotech Bonanza" summer camp; 3) increase the number of "Biotech-in-a-Box" lab kits for needy schools from 30 in 2007 to 45 in 2008 and 50 in 2009; 4) provide 75 middle school and junior high students (with emphasis on minorities and female students) with on-site exploration and curriculum for key science facilities such as Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Jefferson Lab and Department of Forensic Science; 5) provide full merit scholarships to three Virginia science teachers to participate in the academic programs associated with the International Biotechnology convention in Atlanta in June 2009; and 6) provide up to 30 classrooms in 2008 with the Argonne National Laboratory virtual classroom program.)
