"I.  Included in the appropriations for this item is $250,000 the first year from the general fund to promote the use of energy independence technologies developed by the U.S. Department of Defense in concert with the Institute for Defense and Homeland Security, a consortium of Virginia's institutions of higher education and leading industrial and federal research companies, to enhance the use of renewable energy sources and to ensure that the Commonwealth's energy supplies and energy conservation measures are sufficient to support the continued growth of its economy."


Explanation
(This amendment provides general fund support for the transfer of technologies developed for the U.S. Department of Defense by the Institute for Defense and Homeland Security for use in meeting the Commonwealth's energy needs. The Institute for Defense and Homeland Security, initiated pursuant to recommendations developed by the Secure Virginia Panel and Virginia Research and Technology Advisory Commission, represents a consortium of Virginia's institutions of higher education and industrial and federal research companies that responds to national defense aand homeland security research needs. The institute is housed within the Center for Innovative Technology.)
