"Out of the amounts appropriated for Coastal Lands and Bottomlands Management, $250,000 the first year from the general fund is designated for Virginia's share of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project to identify shallow rivers and streams along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay in the vacinity of Mathews County that may require dredging and to develop a plan for the use of dredge spoils.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will subsequently use federal funds to complete the actual dredging of the identified rivers and streams."

Explanation
(This amendment provides funding for initiating dredging activities by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay near Mathews County and their development of a plan for the use of dredge spoil to protect eroding shorelines along the Middle Peninsula and the New Point Comfort Lighthouse. There are a number of shallow rivers in the vacinity of Mathews County that only the smallest of boats may access. The U.S. Corps of Engineers would use state funds to identify needed projects and develop a plan for the use of any dredge spoil. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would then use more than $1.0 million in federal funds to actually perform the dredging. The benefits of this initiative are threefold: (1) the use of the dredge spoil along the Middle Peninsula shoreline would protect property and public safety; (2) the dredge material could protect the New Point Comfort Lighthouse from destruction caused by erosion of the island on which it sits, and (3) once dredge spoil plans have been developed, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would need no further funding to accomodate future dredging needs.)
