"W. Out of this appropriation, $600,000 the first year and $600,000 the second year from the general fund are provided pursuant to § 32.1-122.7, Code of Virginia, to support the Virginia Statewide Area Health Education Centers.  General fund appropriations in this item shall be used for the recruitment and retention, practice support, and training of health care professionals in medically underserved areas or areas with medically underserved populations.  The Director, Department of Planning and Budget, has the authority to make this transfer."

Explanation
(This amendment restores general fund amounts in each year to the Virginia Statewide Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) for the recruitment and retention, practice support and training of health care professions in medically underserved areas or areas with medically underserved populations. The October budget reduction actions eliminated the entire amount of state funding for AHECs which totaled $400,000 annually from the general fund. The 2003 Governor's budget sought to eliminate 90 percent of the AHEC general fund dollars; however, the 2003 General Assembly restored a portion of these funds. Local AHECs will still be required to match 100 percent of the funds received from the state for their activities.)
