"G.  Out of this appropriation, $75,000 the first year and $75,000 the second year from the general fund shall be provided to develop and implement a state plan to raise public awareness of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), including symptoms and risk factors, with the goal of improving the diagnosis and care of COPD patients."

(This amendment adds $75,000 each year from the general fund and language to develop a Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) state plan. This is a recommendation from Virginia COPD Summit held in November 2007. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and it is estimated that 332,616 Virginians are living with this disease. The annual cost of COPD in the United States was $37.2 billion in 2004. COPD is one of the most significant preventable public health problem, primarily because the vast majority of those affected by this disease are smokers.)
