Explanation
(This amendment provides $8,000 the second year from the general fund to the AVOCA Museum on its' ongoning operational expenses. The museum's mission is to promote awareness and facilitate understanding of American history, especially as it relates to local and Virginia natural and cultural history. It maintains a collection of Native American artifacts and Confederate memorabilia. The house is an excellent example of 19th Century American Queen Anne architecture. The property was given to the Town in the 1980s and is operated by the non-profit Avoca Museum and Historical Society. The house contains a unique collection of local antiques, including Native American artifacts and Civil War memorabilia. The current house celebrated its centennial in 2001 with a yearlong celebration. It is open to the public for tours from mid-April through mid-October each year.)
