Explanation
(This amendment provides $100,000 the first year from the general fund to the William King Regional Art Center, which is located in Abingdon. While the State Capitol is being renovated, all its artwork has been removed. William King Regional Art Center has made arrangements to borrow this collection for display in the galleries from April 15, 2006 through late fall when it will be re-installed in the Capitol. This is a rare opportunity to share this, the state's art collection, with Southwest Virginians, many of whom will likely never travel to Richmond it see it. The collection includes many portraits, paintings and sculptures that have relevance to Southwest Virginia, such as Governors David Campbell, Wyndam Robertson and Henry Stuart, other historic persons like John Smith, Patrick Henry, Henry Clay and George Rogers Clark and many more. The expenses associated with bringing this important collection to Southwest Virginia are significant, particularly those associated with its shipping, care and installation. In addition, the Center plans on extensive school programming, both through the regular ArtExpress program and through a new, special program designed to meet 4th grade SOL in Virginia Studies.)
