Explanation
(This amendment provides $45,000 the first year from the general fund to Historic Smithfield Plantation, located in Blacksburg. Funding will initiate a site feasibility study for the plantation. The plantation was built in 1774 when Blacksburg was the edge of the frontier. It models the homes of historic Williamsburg because the original owner wanted to emphasize culture in the wilderness. The manor house was restored in 1964 by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities and its primary mission remains to serve as a living educational museum for the interpretation of colonial history. School tours represent forty percent of visitors to the plantation.)
