Explanation
(This amendment provides $95,604 in the first year from the general fund to the Christiansburg Community Center, which is located in Christiansburg. The Christiansburg Community Center was the first school for black children in Montgomery County. It was built following the Civil War as part of an outreach project of a national Quaker association to provide religious and educational space for individuals and families of the Negro race. The building remains intact and is on the National and State Historic Register. Over the past 125 years the building has endured several owners, including Montgomery County and has been the setting for a day care center and community meetings, including the NAACP, local Ministerial Association, and civic clubs. Currently, the building is used daily for after school activities and tutorials for middle school age students. Volunteers provide special assistance to some children and the building is a safe space for children whose parents may not always be available immediately following the dismissal of school.)
