Explanation
(This amendment provides a grant of $250,000 the first year from the general fund to the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts to assist in the redevelopment of the former Suffolk High School as a cultural arts center. This cultural arts center will feature a modern 500-seat theater, reception space, and classrooms to support the teaching of dance, pottery, textiles, music, visual arts, and computer usage. Once completed, the center's ongoing operations will be supported by space rentals, class registration fees, membership dues, and local fundraising efforts. Additional operating revenue will accrue from the planned lease of space within the facility by the City of Suffolk's Parks and Recreation Department, the local Center for Seniors, and the local Early Childhood Development Commission. The total cost for the redevelopment of the school, orginally built in 1922, is $21.0 million.)
