Explanation
(This amendment provides $5,288,559 the first year and $4,589,079 the second year and 62.75 positions each year from the general fund for the Public Defender Commission. These additional resources will permit the Commission to staff each public defender's office at 75 percent of the attorney staffing level of the corresponding Commonwealth's Attorney's office; provide four additional attorneys for the Norfolk office; create satellite offices in Front Royal and Wytheville; upgrade computer equipment and provide internet access statewide; cover rent increases, and the cost of retirement and group life insurance for part-time employees (who first became eligible as of July 1, 1999, but have not been funded); and, cover costs related to the increase in mileage reimbursement rate effective July 1, 2000, and increased dues required by the Virginia State Bar effective July 1, 2001).
