Explanation
(This amendment provides $5.8 million from the general fund in the second year and matching federal Medicaid dollars to create a new Day Support Waiver program for 600 individuals with mental retardation who are living at home and are on the waiting list for mental retardation waiver services. Day support services include a variety of training, assistance, support, and specialized supervision for the acquisition, retention, or improvement of self-help, socialization, and adaptive skills. These services are typically offered in a nonresidential setting that facilitates peer interaction and community and social integration. As of January 2004, it was estimated that more than 2,000 individuals were waiting for a mental retardation waiver slot. This initiative, in addition to the expansion of the MR waiver program by 880 slots, will provide services for almost 1,500 individuals with mental retardation.)
