Explanation
(This amendment provides additional general fund dollars for the creation of a public defender office in Arlington County. The costs of establishing this office will be supported by general fund savings from the Criminal Fund. These savings are produced by eliminating much of the need for court-appointed counsel to represent indigent criminal defendants. Currently, the charges filed by court-appointed counsel exceed the costs of public defender representation.)
