Effective July 1, 2022, the Compensation Board shall establish a career progression program which provides an annual $800 step increase, up to 25 years, contingent on a positive annual evaluation. Upon the creation of the career progression system all eligible sheriff's department/regional jail employees shall be moved to the step matching years of service within the progression program. Localities shall not use the funding provided herein to supplant local funds provided for the salaries of elected sheriffs or their sworn or non-sworn staff."

Explanation

(This amendment provides from the general fund additional funding for the Compensation Board to increase the starting salary for deputy sheriffs and regional jail officers to $46,000. House Bill 30 as introduced proposes $35,370,400 in the first year and $38,585,989 in the second year to increase these same salaries to $42,000, so this amendment would propose funding for an additional $4,000 base increase per position. Additionally, this amendment proposes a career salary progression program for sheriffs deputies and regional jail employees that provides an annual performance-based $800 increase for up to 25 years. Finally, the amendment stipulates that local governments shall not supplant current local supplements with the additional amounts provided herein. This is a placeholder amendment until a final fiscal impact statement is produced.)
