Explanation

(This amendment redirects $31.5 million the first year and $31.6 million the second year in general funds from the expansion of Early Reading Intervention from grades K-3 to grade K-5 as proposed in the introduced budget. These funds would be redirected to provide one reading specialist per 550 students in grades K-3, pursuant to the passage of House Bill 319. This amendment also provides $36.9 million the first year from the general fund to support the state share of estimated costs of the purchase of new literacy curriculum required by the bill. A companion amendment in Item 129 addresses other components of House Bill 319.)
