Explanation
(This amendment adds to the existing $100,000 each year for the Roanoke-based independent not-for-profit Science Museum of Western Virginia to develop a collaborative science education program with the Science Museum of Virginia, a state agency headquartered in Richmond at the Broad Street Station. It is a goal of the Science Museum of Virginia to increase from 57 to 97 the percentage of Virginia's citizens within a one-hour/50-mile drive of a hands-on science center supportive of Virginia's Standards of Learning in Science. Currently, 57 percent of the population is served by: the seven locations of the Science Museum of Virginia, the Virginia Museum of Natural History, also a state agency, and the Science Museum of Western Virginia, the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Museum, Nauticus, the Virginia Living Museum, the Virginia Air & Space Museum, and the Virginia Museum of Transportation. The Science Museum of Virginia is developing centers in the three areas of the state currently without science centers that hold the remaining 40 percent of the population: Northern Virginia, Harrisonburg-Staunton-Waynesboro, and Bristol-Abingdon.)
