Explanation
(This amendment provides funds and one position to support the creation of a local science center as a division of the Science Museum of Virginia. It is a goal of the Science Museum of Virginia to increase from 57 to 97 the percentage of Virginia's citizens within a one-hour/50-mile drive of a hands-on science center supportive of Virginia's Standards of Learning in Science. Currently, 57 percent of the population is served by: the seven locations of the Science Museum of Virginia, the Virginia Museum of Natural History, also a state agency, and the Science Museum of Western Virginia, the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Museum, Nauticus, the Virginia Living Museum, the Virginia Air & Space Museum, and the Virginia Museum of Transportation. The Science Museum of Virginia is developing centers in the three areas of the state currently without science centers that hold the remaining 40 percent of the population: Northern Virginia, Harrisonburg-Staunton-Waynesboro, and Bristol-Abingdon.)
