Explanation
(This amendment provides $363,000 from the general fund in the second year to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to support the elimination of a population of zebra mussels located in an abandoned quarry in Prince William County. The department has issued a request for proposals to eradicate this invasive species. Of the total amount appropriated, $200,000 is to reimburse the Fairfax County Water Authority for its financial support of this project. The authority had provide $200,000 as well as a line of credit for $163,000 to the department to ensure this project went forward. Should these zebra mussels escape the quarry, they could present a significant threat not only to aquatic life in Occoquan River, but also to the intake pipes of facilities like Fairfax Water as well as recreational and commercial boats.)
