Explanation
(This amendment provides additional general fund dollars to the Department of Conservation and Recreation to complete its soil mapping of Virginia and to digitize the soil information that has been collected. Roughly 97.6 percent of Virginia's soils have been mapped to date; therefore, only 625,000 acres remain to be surveyed. However, only 59.2 percent of the soil information Virginia has collected is in a digitized format. Consequently, the remaining 10.6 million acres need to be digitized for use in local, state, and federal planning. For instance, the relatively new Conservation Reserve Program, operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, requires digitized soils information. In fiscal year 2005, 202 watersheds were approved for participation in this program, which provides a $4 federal match to each dollar contributed to the program by the Commonwealth. Only three of these watersheds were located in Virginia.)
