"Out of the amounts for Financial Assistance for Cultural and Artistic Affairs, $32,500 the second year from the general fund is provided to Oatlands."
Explanation
(This amendment provides $32,500 in the second year from the general fund to assist in the repair and upkeep of Oatlands, an eighteenth century Greek Revival mansion. Necessary repairs to this eighteenth century mansion include repairs to its exterior columns and roof, restoration of a balustrade wall, stabilization of garden dependencies, and repainting portions of the mansion's exterior. The amount requested also includes support for Oatlands' educational programs. Capital repairs are being requested to prepare the mansion for both the celebration of Jamestown 2007 and the 250th anniversary of Loudoun County. The requested amount will be matched by grants provided to Oatlands by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, to which this 360-acre tract was donated. Oatlands provides a number of educational opportunities for local high school, and community college programs in archival research, archaeology, historical interpretation, and horticulture. In addition, the site also hosts a number of community events, including dog shows, art festivals, antique shows, and herb and plant fairs. Oatlands is recognized as both a Virginia and National Historic Landmark and is part of the National Park Service's "Underground Railroad Program.")
